The usual thing is to look in /etc for redhat-release, debian_version or SuSE-release. Then depending on what you find install stuff where required with some default if none of the above. It also gives you the option of doing something different if say RHEL5 is different from RHEL6 by looking at the contents of the file. JAB. -- Jonathan A.
