It's not easy as change config file but it can be done. The reason gdm / kdm is not the front page now is that xrdp can be used for vnc or rdp proxies. Since that is a corner case these days, with x11rdp working so well, we could run xrdp in a different mode that starts X11rdp as user nobody and runs kdm / gdm as root. I'm not sure how we can handle reconnects in that case. Any ideas? Another idea I like is letting the user select window managers on the login screen. Currently, those are hard coded and jpeg is not compiled in usually. This can change too. Jpeg is one of the compression codecs now so we could use it for the artwork.
