First of all, you probably need to take a look at xsltSaveResultTo*
functions from http://xmlsoft.org/XSLT/html/libxslt-xsltutils.html.

Second of all there is xmlXPathCastNodeToString function to extract text
content. But I guess xsltSaveResultTo* are all you need.
