I've heard that Woolite is very very bad for stitched pieces...not sure why
(I'm sure someone else can elucidate!)

There is something called Orvus soap that I've seen advised before for
cleaning stubborn stitched pieces. I gather it's an animal product you can get
at a saddle shop. That's all I know about that as well.

For me, Ivory soap has always worked fine. A badly stained piece is generally
a problem, since whatever will remove the stains will also damage the piece.
It will depend on what the stains are as to how difficult it will be to get
them out successfully. You might try Shout or something similar, but test it
first to make sure it won't bleach out your fibers.
