Substitution is the very wine of life! :D I personally have used a variegated
or overdyed color in place of a color or two in trees (lends an interesting
effect). I also like doing borders with them, especially some of the more fun
multi-colored types.

You might want to check the manufacturer sites for more information on how to
use overdyed/variegated flosses. Caron Collection's site has a lot of
information (www.caron-net.com) In the online class my sister and I designed
for them for this month, we tried to show some different ways to use
variegated colors in a traditional XS pattern. You might get some ideas that
way. Just Cross Stitch's most recent (February?) issue also had a very good
article on using overdyes.
