I used to ball it, as you would a skein of yarn, but was finally convinced that it really worked to open the skein, cut the loop beside the knot, and tie the whole thing in a larkshead knot. I keep the resulting bundle in floss bags in plastic shoe boxes with flip-top lids. I still like it balled, but the other way is faster.
