Well, not always. It truly depends on the "look" you want. "Not" crossing
every X as one goes along *is* a viable option, and gives a more "tweeded"
look to the stitched area. I've found it works best if the variegation is in
varying shades of the same color, rather than in a variegation of two or three
shades, but again, it totally depends on the look one wants. :)
