I get more confuzzled if I *try* to mark a pattern in general, so I don't
bother. I don't tend to get lost (much) even on complex ones.
The only time I marked in the recent past was on a pattern we just finished
where I wanted to make sure I'd stitched everything *except* one color (which
I didn't have, the LNS didn't have, and I had to go further afield to
get...sheesh, it was *only* 208, not *my* fault I ran out!!). That made it
easier to pick up when I finally found the color to finish quickly. However,
it was also a very small pattern, likely wouldn't have done this if it had
been much larger.
Now my sister, on the other hand, on those rare occasions when she actually
has a chance to sit down and stitch, marks stitching off as she goes (using a
pencil...markers don't work well on inkjet-generated patterns!). On picking
up a new piece tonight that she started, I noticed two things...she missed
several stitches of the same color that were in the same area as others she
did, and she was off by one on a whole section that I then had to frog out.
Why the miscounts? She was so intent on marking what she'd done, she got lost!
So of course, since she'd marked the chart, it was kind of difficult to read,
and since I had to rip out a bunch, it was no longer accurate. Fortunately,
since it's one of our own designs, I just printed up a fresh copy, no
problemo. It's way inconvenient on other people's charts...I don't mark
originals to begin with, and if one screws up, while one *could* try to
wheedle a second copy from the copyright-protecting printers, you'd spend
hours remarking it...and what if you make another mistake?
No, I prefer to not mark my charts at all. I just keep tabs if needed with a
postit note so I see which line I'm on. On the other hand, I'm fatally fond
of charts that go qq*p*prr**rqp etc. I find them a challenge. :)
