Hi Miles,
I'd hate to see Bugzilla replaced as the primary tool for user interaction and
defect / feature tracking. It may not be perfect but it's got such a long
cultural history and practices set up around it. But OTOH I have found that
Bugzilla isn't so great for looking at the bigger picture -- there does seem to
be a gap between very high-level Wiki project planning and bugzilla. Maybe
Gerrit will fill that and it will be interesting to see how people's experience
goes with it.

Gerrit is a tool for code review and not a bug tracker. Therefore, it should coexist with bugzilla and not replace it.

BTW, a bit off-topic but we're finding that Git or at least EGit doesn't work
so well for merging files with multiple edits -- which is of course exactly the
kind of thing that it is supposed to be good at -- are people using cmd-line
git or what to handle this stuff?

How about letting the branches diverge less by doing a rebase from time to time or doing an intermediate merge?

regards,
 Moritz

cheers,

Miles

Hi Sebastian,

I was hoping to get rid of saving/loading/copy'n'pasting patch files for doing
code review and managing contributions. And that won't happen as long as we
stick to Bugzilla. However, to my understanding Gerrit won't be a replacement
for Bugzilla as a bug tracker.

Anyway, we can reevaluate the actual value of Gerrit for us once we've gotten
used to Git.

Moritz

I'm not sure about it as it introduces another platform for something that's
already handled by Bugzilla and Eclipse eGit.

Sebastian

Hi,

there is a bugzilla bug where projects are announcing that they are interested
in using Gerrit:
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=283749

For an example of using Gerrit, see http://egit.eclipse.org/

I think this could be of great value for us once we've migrated to git, so
let's announce that we're interested. Objections?

regards,
Moritz
