This is mostly what "status" is meant for in bzr and hg at least. The problem with "tla inventory" is that by default it shows you all the files, including the files that are in the archive and which didn't change (I've added the --no-recursion option to inventory in baz which makes it a bit more useable on non-trivial projects, but it's still providing a lot of useless output). Indeed, if what you want is just the list of unknown files, for example in bzr, you have "bzr unknowns" which does exactly this (and could be parsed to give a diff-mode buffer, like for status).
