on my way to get everything working in XEmacs I spend some
time fixing the cause for load of warnings (one even
signaling broken code) during byte-compile. The following
patch fixes most of them while it should not break anything.

For the next patch I am not sure if it breaks something. It
seems to be ok in GNU Emacs 21.3.1 and XEmacs.
