But I tend to agree that totem feels too bloated, just as most of the
current multimedia apps for linux do (at least on older computers).

In my expereince there's only one exception to this: vlc. Why not give
vlc a chance? It's reasonably small/fast and free, and in my experience
can play most of the video formats out of the box, without relying on a
complex backend such as gstreamer. Perhaps this could be an option for
Xubuntu edgy.

I agree vlc is a nice app, though I use mplayer, which I guess is not a choice due to its dependence on w32codecs.

I hate xmms :) so something on GTK+ based on/similar to Qoud Libet code but not Gnome dependant would be good (Listen, exaile etc)

xfmedia will never evolve enough I guess or at least not in near future. It is a good lite but very simple media player.
