I just stumbled over an alternative Image viewer:

I think it looks really great. it's written in python with pyGTK and I'd
say it beats GQViewer easily on points of UI and performance. It's not
in Debian AFAIK, though, so someone would have to pack it.

ps: you need to {sudo apt-get install python2.4-dev} to install it.
