The page http://www.xubuntu.org/get says "The method of apt-get dist-upgrade is still safe..." this is true, but for someone without much command line experience it may not be clear what you mean. It might be better to just link to the pertinent part of the page:

You might also note that for xubuntu step 1 should be:sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop
