I hope my ignorance is not leading this question, but why would time be spent on updating an older release instead of the current one?

Nothing has been discussed yet. I'd personally prefer spending time on a
dapper update rather than on an edgy update (and not with a RC, but with
a final release).

I agree. If we make updates for released versions I'd prefer dapper as well.
