+1 for an x-chat user . . .

you could always join the #xubuntu-users channel on IRC and just ask what
people use there.  (Of course, you'd need to be using a client to get on the
IRC channel . . . )  :-)

From what I've heard, irssi is a bit more difficult to use, but I figure
that I'll give it a try once I'm more familiar with many of the IRC
commands.
