I'd like to point out that I've been working on a branch of the places plugin ( http://svn.xfce.org/svn/goodies/xfce4-places-plugin/branches/umount/ ) that supports mounting and unmounting volumes. It's stable and works for me; I just need to merge it in to trunk and do another release.
