A quick googling suggests that the new file chooser has a fallback
"simple search" backend that doesn't use locate. If the search takes
time and there's a lot of disk activity it's most probably just going
through your file system instead of querying a daemon.

But yeah, I'd better stop guessing and let someone who actually knows
(and runs gutsy) answer you.
