This was indeed the initial plan, but we finally switched to the new
gdm (unless it changed again very recently). The old one poses too many
maintenance problems, and also configuration files issues (it would
break rather badly when doing things like going back gdm -> gdm-2.20).

So I'm not sure this change is required. I just asked on #ubuntu-devel
to know why the old gdm was accepted into karmic in the first place…
