I have had this kind of problem with a regular computer. I mean control falls back to GDM login screen when I start Xfce session. It helps, if I login in virtual console and remove "~/.cache". After then I can login to Xfce session once. (I save Xfce session on logout.) I have several computers runngin Xubuntu Karmic Testing, but this happens only in one of my computers.
