I am a member of the Ubuntu Foundations team, which is responsible for
the update-notifier package. As a part of our work to reduce the
desktop session footprint[1], I have been tasked with modifying
update-notifier (well really components of it) to be launched by upstart
user jobs rather than be a long running process.

While working on this I ran across bug 947008[2] and update-notifier's
use of an indicator menu. I plan on resolving this bug in Saucy, Ubuntu
13.10, by removing the dconf key com.ubuntu.update-notifier.auto-launch
and the indicator menus. I wanted to let you know in advance so that
you could plan accordingly.
