Agreed with Elfy, this is better in the user group.
Having said that, I think PDF files on the Web can have different mime types, some of which are somewhat odd and cause this behavior. IN my case, 98% of all PDF's open inline in the browser but a few give me the dialog box.
It's gotta be some mime type that firefox doesn't know about, so it asks.

Hi

I am having trouble with file associations on xubuntu 14.04

if I go to this page

http://www.oldwayschool.co.uk/page/?title=Community+activities&pid=86

click on the link to the pdf link it tries to open it in scratch by default

I had some help in #xubuntu, so know how to open it in evince manually,
however I want to try and find out why this is happening (tried this on
13.10 on netbook and it's fine) and see if there is actually an issue
somewhere.

I have put a work around on my block at:
http://zleap.net/xubuntu-14-04-file-association/

I am guessing it is either a software problem or maybe a problem with
the schools website in which case I can let then know about it so it can
be hopefully fixed by their IT technician. It seems odd that this
happens despite pdf files being bound to document viewer in the browsers
settings.

would it be possible to try clicking the link and see what happens
please , It could just be my set up, if other people try it it could
suggest a wider issue if there is a problem.

thanks

Paul

I get asked if I want to save the file and it's opening as a PDF.

The best place for this discussion though is the users list not this one :)
