I am using Debian with XFCE4 so not sure how much more help I can be,
Both Systems use XFCE4, which is useful for comparing how to do things
on different base systems the front end should be the same either way.
How would you like to contribute, I can try and help if I can.
I am not sure on folder colours sorry I can have a look on my Debian /
XFCE but that seems to allow emblems not folder colour changing, the
folder colour feature is useful, having used it before.
