Recently I upgraded to Xubuntu 16.04 on my desk top computer. I also
have a laptop as backup so I installed the same on that too. Then I

round. I had to close down by holding the power button down until it
all finally stopped.

Looking on the internet I find that a lot of people are having the
same problem with version 16.04. There are various suggestions for
fixing it, some of which work for some people but not for others. My
wife and daughter are still on version 14.04 and I was planning to
upgrade their laptops too, but not now.

Has anyone on the list had this problem too? It seems to be just with
Xubuntu and not Xfce. I have also tested both Linux Lite and Linux
Mint with Xfce and they were fine. My desktop mostly works, but a
couple of times I have had the same problem with that.

Any suggestions, comments, help gratefully received.

More research suggested that the problem was with CUPS. There is a package named cups-browserd which apparently takes time to search for any copies of CUPS on your network when you close down. It takes about 90 seconds for the search and only then does the computer finally shut down. This was causing the delay every time I tried to close down the laptop.

So I simply removed that program, using synaptic, and now the laptop shuts down very quickly. Since I do not print from the laptop, but only from my desktop computer, I have not bothered to see if this will cause any other problems with CUPS on the laptop, but I can't see why it should.

When I was researching on the internet there were many suggestions, some of which seemed quite complicated. However, my solution is very simple and effective.
