Yep, I've seen how local shortcuts mask their system counterparts. Trouble is, I want some of the system shortcuts to go away, not be masked, just go away. I guess I could delete or edit the system shortcuts but that's really kludgey...

For years, I've had the same dilemma with many different D/Es, and I won't go anywhere near MenuLibre (what kinda name is that anyway). What I do is have my OWN shortcuts, saved locally under ~/.local/share/applications ... I just looked, and I have 36 in there =) If the file has EXACTLY the same name as the copy under /usr/share/applications/ then it REPLACES the default entry on the menu ... this works for all D/Es as far as I know, with the only quirk being XFCE, my current favorite. That quirk is the Categories section ... it simply MUST exist, or your menu entries will start disappeaing! Let's use Mousepad as a simple example, since it's installed by default (I think) ... Open the file /usr/share/applications/mousepad.desktop in your favorite text editor, and straight away, go Save As using this location: ~/.local/share/applications/mousepad.desktop While you're in the editor, you can safely delete all those extra entries for the various foreign languages, e.g.
Name[ar]=
...
Comment[ar]=
...
GenericName[ar]=
...
Just for fun, change the first line to read: Name=Mousey
then look under Accessories, and you should immediately see the change.
You'll end up with a file that has only 12 lines (reasonably simple to maintain) and once you get the hang of it, hopefully it will save you from tearing your hair out =) BTW: I originally started doing this out of necessity, for programs that you may install manually, but don't come with shortcuts, e.g. mainly development stuff.
