That version is in the repos for Zesty.
To get it available for xenial would mean an SRU [1]
Abiword is no longer part of the default Xubuntu , it used to be
default, the only supported version of Xubuntu which contains Abiword is
14.04 - this will be out of Xubuntu support in a few months.
It's unlikely that we would have the resources to look at an SRU for it
for 14.04.
Lubuntu seed Abiword - it's on their 16.04 release, maybe you'll be able
to get them to do the work on that.
