Thisis more general than just Xubuntu, but there may be specifics, so I'll ask here...

I'd like to run a preferably transparent terminal on the (desktop) root window that I can see, but not touch. There are plenty of transparent-capable terminals out there, that's not the problem. But how to get one to dynamically run on the desktop, stay beneath ALL windows in the Z order, accept no keyboard nor mouse input and not show up in the panel, pager, task switcher, etc.?

In days of old (Solaris 2.51) there was one there by default, running 'tail -f /var/adm/messages'. FWIW, I'd like to run 'top', but that may change.I realize there are various GUI tools that may do something similar, but a terminal is more flexible.

I've Googled, but so far no real luck...

Thanks.
