+1 I agree. Did many-a-hard drive recoveries. A live usb or cd/dvd would give you all the tools you want to affect repairs or data recovery. Another option is Wubi: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide which can be put on the windows machine via an .exe file. Do what you have to do and uninstall. Granted this puts Ubuntu, the parent of Xubuntu, on the system but is an option and gets us a command line. If you need more tools on a live boot option then the Knoppix live or SystemRescueCD would do nicely and both have GUI: http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html http://www.system-rescue-cd.org/ If you have a smart phone available there is an IRC Client on Android/Iphone. There are at least a dozen programs available if all you want is to get to the chat channel for help. Ppl here are happy to help though, we want you up and running on your Xubuntu system. -- Fred
