On the other hand, when I click on the document viewer in the office
menu, I get a window titled 'recent documents' that is blank. I click on
the file foon, get a 'select a file', select my file, get a big icon,
then nothing.

Try running either viewer from a terminal window and see what errors
show up (and post them here).

The core dump should leave an error msg.

$ cd /var/log/
$ less syslog

Type END key to go to the end of the file. Then page up until you find
the core dump msg.

Press Q key to quit out of less.
