The answer may depend on your display manager.

in xfce4, the properties of the various displays may be set in
your .config directory. There, under /xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/,
you should find a file "displays.xml" that contains the settings.
In a terminal you can edit this file to have the desired resolution.

I assume that other display managers have something similar.

at 1024x768 resolution. After I installed the program, however, it would only
operate at "Default" 640x480. Under Display/Settings this was the only option
listed, so it cannot be changed there.
How can I get the installed version to operate at 1024x768 like the CD version
