I've been very successful with Virtual Box.
Strangely enough, I use it for those sad times I have to use Win. It can be run very stably with less resources, linux too. I use it to test out other linux distros too. It's free and easy. Make sure to install the user extensions (it should ask you).

Start Vbox, point it to an ISO or other media, and you're off.

After you put together your main image, save it somewhere offline, in case something happens. The odds of something going wrong are directly tied to whether there's a backup.
