I think the hook you are talking about is grub - it is the first thing
that appears after the computer's own splash screen (if any). This will
be changed automatically when you install your new OS.
Don't worry about re-formating the PClos partition. As Roger said, the
installer will sort that too. Just be careful not to take the 'use full
disk' option. You could follow install xubuntu alongside your existing
systems if you wish - this might feel less complicated.
