Hello,
first the device is not a laptop but a desktop AND I am not trying to
prevent it from locking but the other way around, I want it to lock when
I am away for a a certain period of time.
Cheers,
Gérald

Gerald I've never used xset before so I'm not sure if
sudo xset on
sudo xset +dpms
would help, but I normally enable/disable user screen saver behaviour
in Xubuntu (on an individual basis) by clicking the whisker icon and
typing in screensaver, clicking the screensaver icon, then clicking on
the "Activate screensaver when the computer is idle" slider.
To prevent screenlocking it would be also an option to select the
presentation mode from the menu of the battery icon (if the device is
a laptop) or via
xfconf-query -c xfce4-power-manager -p
/xfce4-power-manager/presentation-mode -s "true" - it can be disabled
by setting it to false again.
