I've just noticed this thread. Sorry I'm late with my observations.

I had a problem with getting xsane to work on my MFP M148dw back in October, 2019, on Xubuntu 18.04. Here's my notes from that effort:

Discovered solution at https://bugs.launchpad.net/hplip/+bug/1813768

Install apparmor utils

sudo apt-get install apparmor-utils

Run

sudo aa-disable /usr/share/

Run as normal user, not as root:

hp-plugin


That solved the problem for me. Hope it's helpful to you.
