Thanks for the link. Unfortunately none of the suggestions I tried from this google search page worked. I have also tried installing Debian (xfce4 version) and Linux Mint xfce4. And I installed the standard Gnome version of Ubuntu 24.04 twice, once followed by installing xfce4 and once followed by installing xubuntu-desktop. In every case, the keyboard switching fails to work in xfce4, even though it works perfectly in Gnome. But I can't bear Gnome, so I have decided that I'll just have to put up with not being able to use alternative keyboards on my desktop computer - I don't actually use it very often these days. I'll just have to use another computer on the rare occasions when I want that facility. David
