Hello,

David M. Carr has kicked of a new open source
project named Zaphod chartered to create a
BSD-licensed XUL motor in Java.

  David writes:

The Zaphod project aims to create a Java-based
system for creating UIs using XML. The system will be
cross-platform and include built-in localization
support, while attempting to remain as simple as
possible.

Now if you wonder how Zaphod will differ from
existing toolkits. David writes in the Zaphod FAQ:

Zaphod is a system for generating graphical user
interfaces (GUIs) in Java using XML. This has various
advantages over other approaches. First, it supports a
better separation of responsibilities, by completely
removing window layout from your Java code. Second, it
can allow you to more easily switch from using one GUI
library to another. While the initial implementation
will use Swing, it is planned to add support for SWT
at a later point. Third, XML expresses containment
more cleanly than Java code, allowing your user
interface to be easier to understand.

David is not all talk but has already check in a
first prototype.
