WHATWG is an open mailing list. It looks out for the interests of
everybody who subscribes and posts to the mailing list.

WHATWG members represent some of the browser vendors who have done the
most work to comply with the standards, and include several people who
have been championing standards since their school days.

WHATWG work is not intended to conflict with any existing standards, and
it is indeed intended to become standard itself on the long run.

I'm not sure how Microsoft's proprietary work compares with an open
mailing list hosting open development of an open specification.

I assure you that WHATWG is not in the iron-smelting business. We are,
however, working on providing Web authors with extensions to their toolset
so that they can get their job done faster and better. If that toolset
contains a fork and is owned by the Devil, and the Devil needs another
prong to perform his Web application work, then I am sure WHATWG would be
happy to look into adding a new prong.

Because our experience talking with Web authors has suggested that they do
not understand the concept of namespaces. Also, namespaces do not apply to
text/html content, and since WHATWG's main concern is backwards
compatibility with text/html, a new namespace would not work.
