On the *reference* 9600 GT PCB, the two pin connector next to the SLI connector is for SP/DIF. For the UNIX drivers, including Solaris and Linux, the audio encoder is not officially supported. It has been reported to work in certain cases, but this is somewhere between accidental and intelligent design. If the VBIOS enables the encoder, the driver doesn't do anything purposeful to turn it off, but it doesn't try to turn it on either.
