Ok, that certainly helped, it's working now. I tried a few different 
options and played around a bit and it looks pretty nice. However, I had 
to disable Xinerama which is a bit of a PITA as I now have two desktops 
without the ability to move windows from one to another. Is there any 
way to get that feature back?

Another question or note. It seems like all the window decorations of my 
windows are gone. I also got a core file in ~ with this backtrace:

The graphical performance was also 10x what I had before. I was going to 
write another email asking about that but it seems to be related to me 
disabling Xinerama. Previously opening a new folder in Thunderbird could 
take 2-3 seconds and changing a tab in Opera up to 5 seconds with a tab 
showing a news page.
