If you install R173 directly from the NVIDIA download page, it will overwrite libwfb and produce this failure.
You will need to reload /usr/X11/lib/modules/libwfb.so and /usr/X11/lib/modules/amd64/libwfb.so from the SUNWxorg-server package. This R173 driver handles libwfb correctly: http://home.comcast.net/~jdmartin99/NVIDIA-Solaris-x86-173.14.18-xVM.run
