The answer depends on the graphics card and the default visual.
Assuming the default visual is set to 8 bit and the graphics card has
only one hardware colormap, increased tendency to has been previously
traced to two causes:

  1. Switch of the desktop from CDE to GNOME.  More colors are used
  for the GNOME desktop.  You need to let us know which desktop is
  being used.

  2. Update Manager desktop icon.  With Solaris 10 Update 4 there
  is a notable increase in the number of colormap cells used by the
  desktop compared to Update 2 or 3.  Removing the icon from the
  desktop freed up a lot more colormap cells for applications.
