If you do a command line login as root (i.e. no X running) and
run 'Xorg -configure' it will create /xorg.conf.new that you can
move to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and edit.
(Autodetecting external ports will probably come later this year
for Intel graphics, when the Xorg 1.3 server is integrated.
Unsure if/when other drivers will add in the Xrandr 1.2 support.)
