Hi Alan, dear community sorry, I'm absolutely not in time with bringing out the announced CSWx* packages, sigh. Also with certain promised Xorg patches (which really don't deserve that name).
Did you notice, that the true sparc coders for the open X11 are still members of XFree86, rather than Xorg? XFree86 4.6.0 offers lots of very important improvements for sparc. Including - for example - basic, newly introduced, support for a few SBus and UPA boards on SunOS 5.x hosts. (Accellaration doesn't work yet.) There were even completely ready2use prebuilt XFree86 binary trees available for download on their ftp site, for years apparently. Including the /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 binary ! Though it will _not_ boot on 98% of sparc machines. It will instantly segfault due to invalid memory accesses, except on my AXi (and maybe on the whole AX* family). But I found a workaround for this. Unfortunately is it much buggier to build 4.6.0 for Solaris sparc, than it was with 4.5.0. Even it you get the actual server binary built: It did nothing productive in several test cases. It goes well through bus scanning (on "good" sparc configs / that's yet a different story). Also the prebuilt server binaries will crash on most machines, but I managed to get a working interim solution: A merge of self-built 4.5.0 and self-built4.6.0 . One has to use "-ignoreABI" because of that mixture, when invoking X. But it works and it does boot Elite3D inside a Blade 2000 !! Plus I don't need the un-free console drivers anymore (i.e. gfxp, m64) to get Xorg or XFree86 to boot on sparc (statement is valid for all ATI based cards, and for the Permedia2 based PGX32 / Raptor). I mean, I can completely live without /dev/fb in some cases. It's otherwise enough to simply do a "touch /dev/fb" in advance. Or, better, "ln -s /dev/console /dev/fb". XFree86 even has been modified recently, to use "/dev/console" on sparc instead of "/dev/fb", out of the box I mean, without making a dirty symlink. But this will not succeed with the UPA boards I tested so far, "invalid ioctl ... " . I will look into UltraLinux and BSD-sparc for that, and compare. ---> I also got the aperture driver to properly work on AMD64 kernels. <--- I guess that's the most important news for most people.
