Thanks Ken. I tried installing the dev version (had a whole lot of fun trying--unsuccessfully--to get a USB boot image to work so in the end had to settle for a bootable DVD) but GRUB crashed out during the initial blue OpenSolaris screen with the message: "Unexpected trap Instruction poiner 0x28 <<more stuff>> unexpected trap in early boot" same with the 124 version. Thanks very much to everyone for their suggestions. Having spent far too much time on this already I'm going to give up and just wait until the next release.
