If your phone has arrow keys, a D-pad, trackball, or optical trackpad, I think pressing/swiping up does exactly what you suggest. That said, most Android phones these days have none of the above, and I'm not sure how we might do this without them (some sort of touchscreen gesture? overriding the volume keys?). -Steven Luo
