I tried a while back, but it was quite slow for initial checkout and it faced considerable opposition. Bzr is much faster now (it does some caching and compression etc), so it whould be feasible; not as fast as svn, as it downloads whole history, but just once and you have it all locally. You can try "bzr branch lp:yade", which tracks our svn since some time. But I am not sure about the agreement of other people here. I personally like that bzr can commit locally (so you can try your changes on your computer) and then push it upstrem and so on. That can be useful.
