It is very likely that it doesn't "hang", but needs lots of memory, kernel starts swapping memory to disk (which is about 1000x slower than RAM), and that speeds compilation down. Check what is your RAM usage during compilation. Try scons chunkSize=... using some number smaller than the default (25 IIRC), also using jobs=... will help (but slow down).
