The only difference I know of is that "Fix released" will remove the bug from list of open bugs; and it feels nice if the bug disappears. I thought once that launchpad would mark all commited bugs released if we make the release, which doesn't seem to be the case. With our frequency of releases, I think marking bugs directly as released is appropriate.
