Maybe a better solution would be to run debug build even without
--debug, if the non-debug does not exist (and give some explanatory
message). What do you think (Anton, but also Janek and others)? Some
people say that explicit is better than implicit, but I am not sure in
this particular case.

Yes for the implicit as long as there is only a debug build found.
