Hi Christian, my 2 cts on the topic. As you mentioned, it is not easy to implement difficult shapes in "free-bug" form. There are even problems with relatively simplest elements (see LP: #850864 bug with facets).
I do not know other open DEM-codes, which have already this implemented. But you can try to do it.
